Young people in Lagos are meeting for wine and book conversations and your favourite digital bank, V by VFD is supporting it.
The gathering of under 50 people, mostly women, happened at the relaxing upscale Micos Café, Lekki and the book of choice was ‘Aegis’ written by Isioma Onyegikei.
Four readers, including Deola Aromiwura, Branding and Digital Manager at VFD Group, were selected to read out specific pages which formed the basis of the conversation while the wine flowed freely. The conversation was anchored by Nigeria’s loved style celebrity, Noble Igwe.
Aegis is a fictional book on the lives of five friends, set in Lagos, Nigeria, narrated in four parts by three women, about the different daily challenges women face in Nigerian society. Aegis talks about sisterhood and friendship and educates on issues including marital abuse, gender-based violence, infertility and surrogacy, prostitution, homophobia, emotional labour, and inheritance laws which affect the daily lives of most women.
The stories were very relatable for the mostly female guests and a number shared personal experiences similar to the book’s theme and how to navigate living as a woman in Nigeria and the world in general.
V bank is a strong female advocate and hopes to stimulate the love for reading by partnering with literacy conversations that can ultimately enhance the county’s reading culture.
